All of my grandparents were pretty amazing people.  My Abuelita Chela (my dad’s mom) was amazing at crochet and cooking (she would make me the best dulce de leche, even though it would burn her hands every time she made it).  She was also a violinist and a schoolteacher (education is very much in my [...]

ALF Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the ALF Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament last month. We raised a couple thousand dollars, despite the awful weather (that night) and economy (this year). This will help in the fight against liver diseases. Maybe someday I will actually learn how to play poker and join you all. In the meantime, I’ll just pretend.

I STILL Liver You

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

It’s that time of year again!

The good news is that since the last Liver Life Walk, my cousin Jeff received a new liver! The bad news is that he still has complications from Hepatitis C. The good news is that we can do something about it!

Get ready for the Liver Life Walk on October 18th! You can donate to me, to someone else on my team, walk with us and help us raise money, or shop!

Thanks to everyone who supported my team and me for the Chicago Liver Wellness 5K Walk and Fun Run. We raised over $3,000 and came in second place for top fundraiser. In total, the walk raised $111,134 for liver research to help those suffering from liver disease, like my cousin Jeff. Thanks! I liver you!

Last chance!

Time is Running Out!

i Liver You

Time is running out! The 5K Liver Wellness Walk & Fun Run on October 13th is quickly approaching. Thanks so much to everyone who has donated! I still haven’t made my goal yet, so I’m going to start getting annoying and emailing all of you and bringing it up in conversation constantly until I get more donations for the American Liver Foundation, which helps people with liver conditions, like my cousin, Jeff.

The liver does a whole lot for you. Your liver is responsible for

  • Storing vitamins, glucose for energy, and making proteins
  • Helping build muscles
  • Stopping cuts from bleeding
  • Killing germs, helping keep the body healthy
  • Making bile to help digest foods
  • Keeping pollutants or toxins from hurting the body
  • Filtering medications, chemicals, and toxins from the body
  • Removing waste products of food breakdown

    ( )

It’s amazing that one organ does all of that, right? So why is it that the heart symbolizes love? All it does is pump blood. Our liver is multi-tasking all day to protect us and keep us healthy and strong. Now that’s love. So, as an incentive, those who donate to my walk will receive an ‘I [Liver] You’ valentine, designed by me.

I Liver You,

P.S. If you want to tell the world how you feel, you can buy your very own ‘I [Liver] You’ t-shirt at . I’ll be wearing one on the 13th!

Walk It Off 5K Liver Wellness Walk & Fun Run

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

For those of you who don’t know my cousin Jeff, you’re missing out. He’s a fantastic husband, dad, son, brother, friend, and (when he’s not making fun of you) cousin. He’s always there for you when you need him and makes you laugh when you least expect it.But sometimes Jeff doesn’t even have the energy to do the things he wants to, because he suffers from hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is an illness that affects the liver, and the liver plays a major role in many functions of the body. As of now, there is no known cure for hepatitis C.

I’m pretty tired of hepatitis affecting Jeff’s life. Which is why I’m asking you to help us in the Walk It Off 5K Liver Wellness Walk & Fun Run October 13th at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. This event supports the American Liver Foundation’s Illinois Chapter as part of the nation’s leading non-profit organization for promoting liver health and disease prevention. Proceeds fund research, education and advocacy for those affected by liver related diseases, including hepatitis.

The exciting part of this Wellness Walk & Fun Run is that we can all help Jeff together!

You can either provide a donation (any amount helps!) or join our team, fundraise and walk/run with us.

Operation Backsplash: Complete

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

So, my backsplash is done and completely awesome, if I do say so myself. In no way could it have ever been done without my aunt and uncle … they are a couple of Handy Andys. I emailed Apartment Therapy to thank them for the advice, and some people panicked because I said that the tile was too porous to be grouted. However, I have a good amount of sealant on there and plan on resealing every four months. So a special shoutout to everyone besides AT who helped me out on this: the guys at Tile Outlet on Fullerton (great tiles for cheap), the guys at Home Depot on Halsted, Mr. Daly, Juni (who did an excellent job sealing the tile), and of course, my beloved Titi and Tío.

Go Shiow!

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

One of my bestest friends in the world, Shiow-Jiau Yung, is doing the Multiple Sclerosis Bike Tour again. She really rocked it last year, and is planning on repeating her success. It’s an excellent cause, so I encourage you to throw a few bucks her way. Knowing that she’s got so many supporters will help Shiow pedal those 175 miles in no time. Besides, who wouldn’t want to support this face?

Let’s face it, people. No kin of mine could be anything other than impossibly adorable. And hungry.
